Mr. Houston. (1992)
Sculptural line drawing fabricated of sterling wire. The figure represents the drawing that Mr. Houston drew in the sand for the neighborhood kids. Mr. Houston was a neighbor and a special role model in my neighborhood. He repaired shoes and I loved to visit his shop and watch him work. He walked with a cane and entertained my siblings and me with his drawing of a man wearing a hat and smoking a cigarette. Mama made his leave out the cigarette. The drawing was exactly the same every time, but we always watched him with rapt attention and respect. Mr. Houston also strummed the guitar, two cords over and over, filling the neighborhood with his song. Dimensions: 6.1 x 3.6 inch.

Totin' Water. (1997)
Brooch fabricated of sterling silver, titanium, stacked layers of carved titanium, round malachite and psylomeline point set in custom bezels and a bronze moon rivet to secure the titanium to the sterling back. Dimensions: 3.0 x 2.4 x 0.5 inch. When I was a small boy I loved visiting my relatives that lived out in the country. One of my aunts lived for a number of years in a house that had no indoor plumbing. All the water had to be brought in from my uncle's well located at the end of a long footpath. This was one of the few chores we were required to do whenever the need arose. Each child was given two metal pails to be filled at the pump. It was a hand pumped well and I always enjoyed the sound the pump made as the water was being drawn up to the mouth of the spout from far below. With pails filled, each was covered with a cloth to prevent debris from falling into the water during the walk back home. Because there was often tall grass along the path, the walk was more a sideways crab-walk than anything else. The wire handle on the heavy pails caused me to stop often to rub and rest my hands. If a pail spilled no help would come to help out. You simply had to go back, refill and try again. Upon returning to the house the water was poured into a larger container. At that moment, I felt that I had made a real and direct contribution to the household. The water that I brought would be used for cooking, drinking, washing dishes, bathing and anything else. The task was difficult, but the feelings of accomplishment and contributiion were priceless.
